This is a Hank spinning machine, mankind's oldest industrial fiber-making machine.
This one is on permanent display at Nature and Science Museum (@tuatmuseum) on the Koganei Campus.
The Hank spinning machine is a machine that makes fiber from cotton.
The cotton attached to cotton seeds is obtained by separating it from the seeds in a ginning machine, but this leaves short fibers behind with the seeds.
This machine turns it into fiber without leaving any residue.
Sodium hydroxide and copper ammonia dissolve the seeds attached to the fibers and turn them into a liquid.
The liquid enters the center of the machine's line of cylinders and comes out of the narrow opening of a funnel at the bottom of the cylinders as a single fiber!
What looks like a blue ribbon is actually a roll of the fibers.
The fibers are blue because of the copper ions.
Finally, once the thread has been washed with acid and turned white, this Hank-type spinning machine will have accomplished its mission!
Fiber extracted directly from cotton is called cotton, a vegetable fiber, but the fiber obtained through this machine is called cuprammonium rayon (cupra), a regenerated fiber.
Although rayon wrinkles easily, it has excellent absorbency and dyeability, and is still used today for clothing fabrics, linings, and industrial fibers.
This machine is so valuable that it has been recognized as a chemical heritage by the Chemical Society of Japan.
TUAT museum also has a display of other tools and machines that are important in the history of textiles!
