Free tuition for new students enrolled in the 2025 academic year for large families
How to apply for admission and tuition fee exemptions for undergraduate students enrolling in April 2025 who are from large families
[Requirements for large families]
?Households with three or more children supported by the main breadwinner
?The scholarship recipient is supported by a financial supporter
[Overview of the system]
The free tuition system for large families will be implemented within the existing framework of support for higher education.
The new higher education support system is a system in which if you are accepted as a Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship recipient, your tuition fees will be reduced or waived depending on your support category.
Therefore,
those who are eligible for free tuition for large families must complete both the following procedures: 1) "Apply for admission and tuition fee reduction under the new academic support system (submit Form A1)" and 2) "Apply for a grant scholarship."
?
In addition, for large families,
regardless of their financial situation,
if they apply for a Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) grant scholarship, the JASSO will determine whether they qualify for the free tuition for large families system.
If JASSO determines that you are a large family and issues you a scholarship number, and you express your desire to be exempt from admission and tuition fees as a result of that determination (by submitting Form A1), you will be eligible for free tuition for large families (the new higher education support system).
[Required Procedures] (Both 1 and 2 are required.)
1. Apply for admission fee and tuition fee exemption (submit Form A1)
2. Apply for a scholarship (April after enrollment*)
*Those who have reserved admission must submit a notification of enrollment
[Procedure flow]
(1) Application for exemption from admission fee and tuition fee (submission of Form A Form 1): Submit it enclosed with the admission procedure documents.
Please download the application guidelines from this page.
* If you have already completed the admission procedure, submit Form A 1 to each campus Student Support Section immediately after enrollment.
(2) Receipt of scholarship materials*
(3) Application for scholarship*: Apply at the campus counter around mid-April after enrollment
*For details, please see the page about distribution and application of scholarship information for Reiwa 7 student recruitment.
(4) Announcement of results: Scholarships and tuition exemptions are scheduled for June or later
[Payment of admission fee and tuition fee]
If you are applying for an exemption, collection will be deferred until the decision is made, so please do not pay either the admission fee or tuition fee and instead submit Form A-1.
[If the admission fee has already been paid]
If your family is determined to be a large family and is eligible for the new higher education support system, tuition fees already paid will be refunded by following the prescribed procedures.
[Frequently Asked Questions] Updated on March 13, 2025
Q. I have three dependent children and qualify for the free tuition for large families. Do I need to go through any procedures to receive this support?
A. Yes. The free tuition for large families is a system implemented within the framework of the higher education support system, so you will need to apply for an exemption from admission and tuition fees to our university by submitting Form A1, and you will also need to apply for a Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship during the application period in April after enrollment.
Q. When applying for a grant scholarship after enrollment, how should I fill out the grant scholarship information section of Form A1?
A. Please check "I have applied for enrollment" and write "I plan to apply in April after enrollment."
Q: What should I do with the student ID number field on Form A1?
A. You may leave this field blank as you have not yet been assigned a student ID number before enrolling.
Q: What grade should I enter in the grade column of Form A1?
A Please enter the academic year you will be in after enrollment (as of April 2025).
Q. Do I need to go through a separate procedure to receive a tuition fee exemption?
A. This is included in the "etc." for tuition fee exemption, etc. Students who are accepted as grant scholarship students and whose scholarship payment period is the same as the month of enrollment are also eligible for tuition fee reduction.
Q. When is the application period for grant scholarships?
A. It is scheduled for mid to late April. *Published on March 13, 2025
*For details, please see the page on distribution and application of scholarship information for enrolled students in the 2025 academic year. After enrollment, please also check the notices on the SIRIUS bulletin board carefully.
Q. Where can I find the application instructions and application form?
A. Please see the Tuition Fee Exemption page.
Q. I cannot apply for a grant scholarship because my parents have a high income. However, I would like to receive a tuition exemption because I am a large family. What procedures do I need to follow?
A. Yes, you can apply for a grant scholarship. The income of the guardian does not affect the application for the large family free tuition (however, if the assets are over 300 million yen, you will not be eligible for support). Even if the household income is high, if you meet the requirements for a large family, you will be accepted as a "scholar without a grant scholarship support category" and will not receive a grant scholarship, but will be exempt from all tuition fees at the university.
