TitleTarget protein analysis of anticancer saponin OSW-1

Our group has been on a molecular fishing expedition in search for target proteins of potent and selective anticancer natural product called OSW-1, which is found in the roots of an African lily. Target proteins are key proteins that mediate a mechanism of action of drug molecules. Using a molecular fishing rod, which is a chemically modified natural product with a tag, I narrowed down a list of candidate proteins we found earlier and uncovered a potential target protein. I then investigated whether OSW-1 and the protein actually bind with an acceptable target-like strength. I am currently confirming the role of this protein in the anticancer mechanism of OSW-1, aiming to discover a novel anticancer therapeutic pathway with little to no side effects. Identifying an elusive target of OSW-1 and therefore the mechanism of action, should lead to the development of novel selective anticancer drugs.
