学長告辞

　本日、新万博体育_万博体育官网-【官方授权牌照】大学院連合農学研究科を修了され、博士学位を授与された皆様、誠におめでとうございます。ここに至るまでの間、研究に邁進する充実した時間と過ごされると共に、想像もできなかった大きな困難に直面したことも多かったのではないでしょうか。それらを乗り越え、日々の研究に全力で取り組み、その成果として学術の新しい世界の一端を切り拓かれたことは誠に素晴らしいことです。

　私はかねてより、産業界を含めた様々なお立場で活躍される方々から、「博士とは何か、何ができる人なのか」、と尋ねられることがよくあります。当然の事ながら多くの人が推察するとおり、ある専門性の高い領域で、新たな学術的な進展を成し遂げ、そしてこれからも発展的にその活動を推進することが期待される人であることは間違いありません。また、博士本人が自分の専門性を強く意識され、他者との違いとしてそこに焦点を当て、自分の強みとしてそのことを強調することもしばしば見受けられます。しかし、博士としてのあるべき本当の力はそのような狭いものの見方だけで理解されるべきものではありません。先日も、大企業の経営者の方々と、博士とはどのような人かと言うことについて、意見交換をしました。その時私は、博士の持てる力、可能性は大企業のトップを経験された皆様方のかつての姿と全く同じであると考えていますよ、とお話いたしました。大企業のトップになり、そこで大きな責任を負ってさらに前に進めることはどれほど大変か、私自身には想像もつきませんが、恐らく単に会社で売上に最も貢献したとか、新たな事業の開発に成功したとかいう、簡単な表現では済まされない、もっともっと深淵な力をつけられ、それを存分に発揮され、周囲を惹きつけて来られたのではないでしょうか。博士とはそのような人としての力を持つ者であり、決して実社会とかけ離れた、特別な世界にいる人のことではないとは私は確信しています。

　博士とは自らの深い思考から導かれた志を変えることなく、学問の探究を通じて培われた「人としての道」を固く守ることを体幹に備えた人のことであると考えます。この認識に基づき、自らしっかり覚悟し行動に移すことは、まさに科学者としての本分である未知の現象、原理を解明し、新たな知識を導き出すことに通じるものです。また、このような生き方やものごとに取り組む真摯な姿勢は、周囲の人々を惹きつけ、また新たな人材を次々と育成し、さらには社会をあるべき方向に導く原動力となるものです。一つのことを成し遂げるためには、従前の方法や考え方を超えた、新しい、創造的な挑戦が必要となります。また、何かを始め、実際に行動するためには、人の力も借りて、また人に力を貸すことも不可欠です。自分とは違う考えにもしっかり耳を傾け、他者の個性を尊重しつつ、自分自身の独創性を発揮する必要があるわけです。また、皆様はこれまでの沢山の経験を通して、必ずしも十分でなかったこと、もっとこうすればよかったと思うことも今もすぐに頭の中によぎらせることができるはずです。自分がまだまだ知らない事だらけであるということを、以前よりもはっきりと、そして遙かに多くの点で認識されているのではないでしょうか。私は、この全てが博士となった皆さんに不可欠なことであり、それがあるからこそ、これからの更なる発展、大きな成長があると思っております。

　ご承知のとおり、今日の世の中は激動の渦中にあり、複雑化する国際関係と共に様々な社会的リスクも増え続けています。気候変動や自然災害の増加、生物多様性の喪失、延いては食料供給に対する社会不安の拡大にも繋がっています。このような時だからこそ、現在から未来に向けて変化し続ける社会や環境を的確に把握し、我々自身に迫るこうした諸々の課題を俯瞰的に捉え、その解決に向けて強い意志を持って実践することが不可欠であると考えています。その力の源泉は旺盛な好奇心に支えられた探求活動に邁進する熱意に他なりません。人と人とが出会い、繋がりを深める中、他者の個性を尊重し自らの独創性を発揮できる人こそがこれからの国際社会に求められ、それこそがいま博士号を取得された皆様に期待されていることであると思います。

　いま目の前にある学位記を手にされ博士となられた皆様が、これからさらに、自分自身でもまだ気づかぬより大きな力を発揮し、未来に向けて無くてはならない人として活躍されることを心より願っております。

　皆様への大いなる期待を込めて、心からのお祝いの言葉と致します。

Ceremonial Address

　Congratulations to all of you who have graduated from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and received your Ph.D. degrees today. I am sure that you have spent a lot of fulfilling time doing your research, and at the same time you must have faced many unimaginable difficulties in the period leading up to this point. It is truly wonderful that you have overcome these difficulties and devoted all your energies to your daily research, thus opening up a new part of the academic world.

　For some time now, I have often been asked by people in various positions, including those in industry, what a doctor is and what he or she can do. Many people naturally assume that a doctor is someone who has made new scientific advances in a highly specialized field and is expected to continue such activities in the future. Often, the graduate student is very aware of his or her own expertise, focusing on it as a difference from others and emphasizing it as one of his or her strengths. However, the real strength of a Ph.D. should not be understood in such a narrow way. I recently had a discussion with a group of executives from a large company about what kind of person a Ph.D. should be. I told them that I believed the power and potential of PhDs was exactly the same as it had been for those of you who had been at the top of large companies. I cannot imagine how difficult it is to become the head of a large company and take on great responsibility and move forward, but I am sure that you have developed a much deeper power that cannot be expressed in simple terms such as making the greatest contribution to the company's sales or successfully developing a new business, and that you are able to fully demonstrate this power and attract the attention of others. I believe that he or she has developed a much deeper power, which has fully demonstrated and attracted people around them. I am convinced that a doctor is a person who has this ability as a human being, and not a person who is in a special world far away from the real world.

　A doctor is a person who has firmly established the "way of humanity" cultivated through academic pursuits in his or her core, without changing the aspiration derived from his or her own deep thinking. Based on this realization, we must be willing to act on our own initiative, which is the essence of being a scientist, in order to elucidate unknown phenomena and principles and to derive new knowledge. This way of life and sincere attitude towards everything we do attracts people around us, nurtures new human resources one after another, and is the driving force that leads society in the direction it needs to go. Achieving something requires new and creative challenges that go beyond conventional methods and ways of thinking. It is also essential to start something and actually take action, both with and without the help of others. We must listen carefully to ideas that are different from our own, respect the individuality of others, and demonstrate our own originality. In addition, I am sure that from your many experiences to date, you can still think of things that you have not necessarily done enough of, or things that you wish you had done better. I am sure that you realize more clearly and in many more ways than before that there is still so much that you do not know. I believe that all of this is essential to you as graduate students, and that it is because of this that you will continue to develop and grow greatly.

　As we all know, today's world is in a state of upheaval, with increasingly complex international relations and a variety of social risks. Climate change, increased natural disasters, loss of biodiversity and growing social unrest over food supply are all contributing to this situation. Especially in times like these, we believe it is essential to accurately grasp the ever-changing society and environment from the present to the future, to have a bird's eye view of the various challenges we face, and to practice with a strong will to solve them. The source of our strength is our enthusiasm for exploratory activities, supported by our strong curiosity. As people meet and deepen their relationships with each other, those who can respect the individuality of others and demonstrate their own originality will be in demand in the international society of the future, and I believe this is what is expected of those who have now earned their doctoral degrees.

　I sincerely hope that all of you who have received your Ph.D.s and are now doctors will go on to demonstrate even greater abilities that even you are not yet aware of, and will play an active role as indispensable people for the future.

　With great expectations for all of you, I offer you my heartfelt congratulations.
